Several individuals have received fraudulent emails impersonating Pastor Jeff Huber. These messages are part of an ongoing scam designed to trick recipients into sharing personal information, purchasing gift cards, or responding to unusual requests.
Please know: these messages are not from Pastor Jeff or the Summit office.
Cybercriminals frequently impersonate trusted leaders to create urgency and pressure people into responding quickly. Phishing scams remain one of the most common cybersecurity threats because they exploit trust and familiarity rather than technical weaknesses.
How to Protect Yourself: The SLAM Method
When you receive an unexpected message, remember the SLAM method:
S — Sender Verification
Do not rely on display names. Always check the actual email address for misspellings, extra characters, or suspicious domains.
L — Link Inspection
Hover over links before clicking to see the true destination.
A — Attachment Scrutiny
Avoid opening unexpected attachments—even if they appear to come from someone you know.
M — Message Analysis
Be cautious of messages that create urgency, request unusual actions, or deviate from normal procedures.
Scammers often rely on urgency, authority, and familiarity to manipulate people into acting quickly without verifying the request.
What To Do If You Receive a Suspicious Email
If you receive a message claiming to be from Pastor Jeff or another church staff member that seems unusual:
Do not reply or click links.
Do not send gift cards or financial information.
Verify the message by contacting the person directly using a known phone number or email address. Summit staff member email address all end in @summitdurango.org
Report the message to the Summit office.
